How does one get into a career in make-up?

My fiance was laid off from her desk job and now wants to get into make-up. It's something she's always wanted to do. She wants to work either a dept store (like Bloomingdales) or a salon. I know there are courses out there (especially here in NYC), but are they necessary? Can she get hired without them? Thanks!How does one get into a career in make-up?
It's always possible toget a job with make-up or fashion without previous training. Is it a good idea to have it...yes most definately. She can go to a beauty school, or take a makeup class. i would recommend beauty school.
